Global Central Bank

Ben has opined about the possibility of the Amero. How about this possibility? I think something like this is far more likely: similar result, less political backlash. We won't feel like we're throwing in with the Mexicans. It'll feel more like belonging to the UN. We know how folks feel about that. We also know how well that institution works. Similar idea, different wrapping. Equally stupid. How about no central bank, gold as currency? It worked pretty well for ~3000 years. Why did we have to go and screw it up?
